Recomendations

Based on the data and information gathered from the interviews, we have outlined 3 recommendations along with 1 additional aspirational recommendation we believe will help the migrant families.

Implement a referral system for families to receive resources, counselors, or therapists

We recommend the Chicago Public Schools establish a referral system to connect migrant families with essential resources, counseling services, and therapists. Many migrant families are unaware and struggle to access support resources due to the language barrier and lack of information. Implementing a referral system for families will help streamline access to care and resources.

This system would include referrals to:

  • Spanish-speaking counselors and therapists

  • Weekly adult educational meetings

  • After-care programs for children

  • Food banks

  • Health clinics

  • General Chicago information

Creating a centralized referral system for migrant families could alleviate stress and uncertainty for families and allow them to more easily access services and information.

In order to implement and spread the word of this referral system, it will be important to equip schools with referral guides, resource lists, and form partnerships with organizations that interact with migrant families.
